Don't Shoot the Piano Player
Among its original owners was the actor Clark Gable. He bought the piano in the lobby (a California Bungalow Baby Grand built in 1905) as an anniversary gift to his wife Carole Lombard. The couple was married in 1939 during a filming break for “Gone With The Wind.” Lombard died in an airplane crash in 1942.
The hotel was later acquired by the songwriter and composer Hoagy Carmichael (“Stardust,” “Georgia on my Mind”) whose songs were recorded by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Norah Jones and Bing Crosby.
Ironically, Carmichael appeared in the movie “To Have and Have Not,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and played the aforementioned piano while singing a duet with Ms. Bacall.
John Lennon was quoted in the late ’70s as saying Carmichael was his favorite songwriter.
The resort is currently owned by Nancy and Jim Demetriades, who also own The Landing Resort and Spa at South Lake Tahoe. Initially, Demetriades had plans for redeveloping the six-acre property, which features three restaurants and the hotel. He later decided to renovate instead, preserving a slice of Mammoth history.
